Lake Biogeochemistry - MyCYCLE

The MYCYCLE research axe investigates the transfers and transformations of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) within lake catchments by combining biogeochemical, limnological, paleolimnological, and modelling approaches. A stronger emphasis have been placed on a multi-scale perspective, integrating processes across the terrestrial–aquatic continuum, from atmospheric and glacial compartments to lake ecosystems.

Key challenges and research questions

MYCYCLE focuses on understanding lake functioning and the role of biogeochemical cycles in shaping ecosystem dynamics. The research will investigate the processes controlling carbon and nutrient fluxes in lakes, while assessing the impacts of global environmental changes, including climate change, atmospheric deposition, recreational activities, and catchment management. Through an integrated approach, the theme aims to unravel the complex feedbacks between hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes.

The research will also advance methodological developments, particularly through in vitro incubations and isotope-based approaches to better identify and quantify nutrient sources. Improved predictive models will be developed to assess the consequences of global change on lake biogeochemical functioning and to provide robust scientific tools for the sustainable management of lake ecosystems under increasing anthropogenic and climatic pressures.
