Summer school « Biomarkers for Lakes Ecological Monitoring»

Summer school « Biomarkers for Lakes Ecological Monitoring»

Summer school « Biomarkers for Lakes Ecological Monitoring» Thonon les Bains 26-30 June 2023

One week training for students MSc or Doctoral degree.

The objective of the Summer School is to strengthen knowledge in lakes ecological monitoring with a strong focus on biomarkers and high frequency methods.

The proposed courses and training will be structured around three main fields of application:

- Diagnosis of the ecological status of lakes: in situ measures of physico-chemical parameters, sampling of some common biological indicators.

- Diagnosis of specific diversity: use of eDNA for environmental paleo reconstruction and hydroacoustic for non-invasive fish monitoring.

- Diagnosis of ecosystem functioning and biotic interactions: principles of using stable isotopes as biomarkers for trophic transfer, use of UHPLC (Ultra High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) to detect metabolites produced by organisms (e.g. chemical interactions) and pigments.

A complementary objective of the Summer School is the creation of a digital training tool. This involves the creation during the activities of a short “capsule video” on one of the specific topics proposed during the lectures. After a synthetic illustration of the methods, the students will be interviewed and will give tips and advices based on their practical experience with the technique. The ‘capsule video’ will be posted open access on the CARRTEL YouTube channel to be used by teachers and students for educational purposes.

The training school will be held in Thonon les Bains and organised by the UMR CARRTEL staff. The courses and a shared accommodation in Thonon les Bains (25-30 June) are offered by funding from INRAE- Department AQUA and the CARRTEL personnel. The CARRTEL technical platforms and the Lake Observatory (OLA) will provide support for the boat field works and in situ measurements (probes, sampling devices, etc.).
